Trans-Canada HWY Cache trail
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:33:00 AM »
I thought I would toss this idea out and see what others thought about it.

During a geocaching run back in April (first day out with the car after it's winter sleep), we noticed a very poor cache count along the major highways leaving Sudbury. On this particular run, I setup a queue from just outside of Sudbury to Parry Sound. The area covered 2.5km on either side of the hwy.
Once outside of Sudbury, we discovered that there was approximately 10 geocaches available to find before hitting the town of Parry Sound. Long story short, a 400km Geocaching run gained us ~15 cache finds (mostly in Parry Sound).

What I would like to know is if others on this form would be interested, and or willing to hide one or two caches each along the Trans-Canada hwy in their area.
If we can increase the cache count along the major northern hwys, we may be able to entice the southern cachers to come north, and see/enjoy what we know as real geocaching.

Just a thought, Anyone interested?

Thanks to the efforts of some of our small town cachers here in the north we actually have an excellent collection of highway accessible caches stretching from Thunder Bay all the way to White River along the north shore.

To the west more of the caches tend to be centered around towns such as Ignace, Dryden and Kenora, but you could still manage a large number of finds on your drive through.

it would be nice to go on a drive to toronto from say the boarder and find lots of caches, and i know in thunder bay and surrounding hwy areas their is quite a few but once you get further out along the hwy south or north route they start to disperse alot more and having more oppertunities to explore hidden gems in these areas would be wonderfull
If all you know is your country, how do you know your country?

In this area here, I hope to place hand full or so caches along the hwy in the Whitefish/Worthington area.
I am looking at hwy 69 right now trying to find some good areas that way. The problem there is they are currently 4 laning that hwy, so other then rest stops, I'll have to wait until the work is done.

I agree with Wandering Man; we do have a good population of quality cache hides along the hwys in our area already.   I would rather see more quality caches hidden than a large # of poor quality caches (hidden for the only purpose of there being a cache along the hwy.)

ChrisDom,
I agree with the need for these caches to be of quality.
In this area, we've been pretty lucky with most caches being of good quality, well maintained, and in some pretty neat areas.

Could be a few that pop up for the 2nd Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival Event Cache, you just never know.
