10 Years! Event
« on: February 19, 2010, 09:53:48 AM »
When I submitted the listing for the SCC, the reviewer pointed me to a topic on the geocaching forums about organizing a 10 Years of geocaching event. There are lots of geocaching organizations around the world celebrating the deactivation of selective availability in the GPS which allowed geocaching to happen. There is a coin being produced for the event and the organizers are encouraging local groups to host their events all on the same date, May 2, 2010. Perhaps there's interest here for such an event, even though it's just two weeks ahead of the SCC. Thoughts?

I think it is a good idea.

There is still time to come up with something

As you may remember I did make a comment in the chat room a couple of weeks ago about this.

We should look at something in Marathon for that weekend.  Lots of new caches in the area lately. Then there is always the new Wherigo to find and 3 new earthcaches.

Maybe a hike to Hawk Ridge - the site of the first geocache in Marathon area (put out on Sept 2, 2002).  and the new earthcache there.

Let me think about it for a while, and I will see what I can do.  pnutbeagle agreed with me - lets do it in Marathon.

We could even do it on the Sunday to accommodate H-K's strenuious work schedule

Sunday would be great for Neys Lunch too!!!!  it's a short day so maybe we could get the old folks to hold down the fort while we go play!!!!!  We haven't done Hawks ridge yet, might be cool to do it in a group!!

Shroom brought up the possibility of a ten year event, and Jlee by the sounds of it is planning one for Marathon. Are you (shroom) or anyone else planning one for the Thunder Bay cachers ? I Know that many Thunder Bay cachers will not travel that distance for a one day event on a Sunday due to commitments or other reasons, so just wondering what is  in the plans ? It is a historic moment in geocaching, that's for sure, so just wondering what is available to attend this point in geocaching history. Would hate to see this come and go without some form of celebration. (break out the horns, noise makers, goofy party hats and of course brewskis) :P

I thought that the Sunday would work well with the Thunder Bay geocachers going to Marathon - travel in the morning for the event starting about noon to 1:00 pm - wrap up by 4:30-5:00 so everyone can get back to Marathon that evening not too late.  Even people working on Saturday (who shall remain nameless) will be able to come.

Just remember the Marathon people would effectively be traveling to 2 events in Thunder Bay over a month's period and the Thunder Bay people only to one event out-of-town during that month for the event in Marathon.

Huhh? Just wondering whats available. Saturday has no bearing in this as it is a Sunday event. May 2 2010 so if there is an event in Thunder Bay why travel to  Marathon. Just want to see whats going on in our radius which of course includes Minnesota as it is close to opening of our friends camp right around that time, and they may have an event as well. We gots to know sows we have an idea of which way to point the truck. North South East West.  Just axing wazz happening  ;)

H-K, maybe if you start out in Marathon, you can make all three events (if there are 3).

We can have one in Thunder Bay too, if there's interest. I'd suggest picking a different location (not that the Madhouse isn't a good place with lots of couches and stuff to sit on) but maybe for some variety, or some family-friendliness. I wonder if we chose a location soon, if we could even try to have a few caches hidden in the area for it? Not that there aren't a tonne at the cascades already, but if we did it there (or a place like there) we could bring some wood and light up the public BBQs and have some outdoor warmth too. (Marshmallows anyone?)

Other places that might work for an outdoor event would be the little park on the north east corner of the Current River Bridge (N 48° 28.176 W 89° 12.001) or Chippewa (there are BBQ "things" there, right?) or even out at Silver Harbour (not Islet.) I think I might be thinking that fire is necessary because it's a cold morning. Fire probably won't make or break an event in May. :) So, interest for a TBay 10th Anniversary Event too?

I like the idea of an outdoor event with some que'in and cachin'. I'm just not sure if I will have time to attend. May tends to be a busy month for me and I'm already committing to the SCC. But if I'm free this certainly sounds like it would be a blast.

Sounds good to us too. Hard to believe Geocaching is only 10 years old. How many locals were active right at the start? And where are they now ?

Okay, so here's the skinny. Marathon is having a 10 Years event. That's great, I wish you fantastic success and hope you get your minimum 10 attenders. Shouldn't be a problem.

However, for us Thunder Bayers, it's a good drive. With the little dude, and it happening on a Sunday at 1pm, there's no way we can make it to that event. But, I'd love to participate in this celebration and would love to get that little 10 Years cache icon too. :)

So, here's one last call for Thunder Bay area NWOGers. Should we attempt a 10 Years event, even though we've got a CITO and SCC happening around the same time?

I've got a listing ready to submit for the Cascades where they also have BBQ pits. We could do a meet up in the afternoon, or a meet up in the evening, roast some hot dogs, find a new cache or two (that will probably be placed in time for the event) play a geogame, etc. Not looking for a long time commitment, just an hour or so, like we normally do, probably.

Any takers?

I'm tempted to say we have enough events planned, but the reality of it is that I'm probably not going to have plans that weekend anyway so I would be free.

If there is enough of an interest in it then I say sure.

Not to take away from the other events but the 10year anniversay only happens once!  I'll be there.

We were either doing it in Minnesota, or Marathon, but now this saves us a drive. We will be there

Sounds like you guys are trying to steal my attendees.  LOL

Remember the Marathon folks come to the Thunder Bay events as often as they can.

There are still a lot of new caches in the Marathon area, several that have not been found yet (2 EarthCaches come to mind)
